Meet Camille Andrew, an inspiring young environmental advocate and Bristol Bay Native Corporation Shareholder who joined the PPS team this summer.
Camille is from the Tribal Village of Igiugig in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. Her innate understanding of nature’s intrinsic value has informed her commitment to environmental education and addressing the eco-related anxieties so many experience from the effects of climate change.
With a mission to be a steward of the environment and help realize opportunities that will positively impact and sustain Alaska’s Indigenous communities on the front lines of climate change, Camille chose environmental studies as her major and completed her bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 2022.
During her university years, Camille engaged in a three-course Capstone series, during which she worked with UW Bothell and Cascadia College on their Common Caws for Sustainability Podcast. She contacted and interviewed guests who had unique expertise and experiences related back to the podcast’s overarching themes of climate anxiety, environmental education, and activism. She also focused on and explored the relationship between people and land when policy and preservation are enacted, as well as environmental communication and effective ways to ensure inclusion are at the center of environmental matters in her undergraduate studies.
Camille joined our team in June as a Tribal Clean Energy Research Analyst Intern and is helping to gather, analyze, and synthesize a wide range of data sources to support strategic decision-making and advance our organization’s mission. In this role, Camille is actively gaining experience in the clean energy industry while also focusing on the intersection of tribal sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and policy advocacy.
We’re thrilled to have Camille on our team and encourage you to hear her commitment to environmental stewardship first-hand by listening to an episode of the Common Caws for Sustainability podcast. In this episode, available on Spotify here, Camille interviews Igiugig Tribal Village Council President AlexAnna Salmon and discusses how climate is impacting Indigenous villages in Alaska, including those in the Bristol Bay region where Camille grew up.
